This is the BLOG Post for 07/20/2013!!

Hello Fellow Wandering Travelers!!!

First, if this BLOG Post says that it is July 22, 2013, DON’T BELIEVE IT!!!! This BLOG Post is for July 20, 2013!!!

I had to spend a few nights in a campground that said they had internet Wi-Fi, but that’s if you stood on your head at the top of a tall fir tree, facing south-south-east, exactly!!!! Anyway, I was in Copper Harbor, Michigan at the Fort Wilkins Campground and it was remote enough that I couldn’t get or send cell phone calls, text Messages, E-Mail, or browse the WEB!!! In other words, I was cut off from any communication except pay phone. I did go on a trip to the top of a mountain and was able to send out a Text Message (I think)!

This BLOG Post is for July 20, 2013 and what I did on that day!!!

Today, I left the KOA RV Park just outside Newberry, Michigan and drove and drove and drove!!! The weather was beautiful – bright sunshine, blue skies, and warm, but not hot weather!!! I had heard about some mining museums in the northern part of Michigan, so that’s where I decided to go!!! One is located at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula just outside a town called Copper Harbor, Michigan. There is also a reconstructed fort called Fort Wilkins. It also has a campground that looked perfect for me. So off I went!!!

From Newberry, MI, I found US-2 where I had left off and started to head west again. US-2 went along Lake Michigan some of the way and I took some photos. Here are the last of the photos of Lake Michigan so say goodbye for this trip ---

Okay, so I slipped in a photo of my Little Ford Truck and Nomad Trailer – they’re doing all the work, so they should get some billing, right!!!????

As I drove along, I snapped a few shots of the roads and here they are ---

Then I got off US-2 to drive to the Keweenaw Peninsula. The road went along Lake Superior and here are some shots of that ---

I finally got to the Fort Wilkins Campground and parked the trailer and got all set up. I finished at about 6:00 PM, but found out that the Fort Wilkins Reproduction was open until about 9:00, so off I went with my camera in hand!!! The fort is located on a lake called Fanny Hooe Lake and this lake has a creek that drains it called Fanny Hooe Creek which flows less than a half mile and drains into Lake Superior. You can stop laughing!!! The lake and creek were named after the sister of the first commanding officer’s wife. She was at the fort for a time and the men liked here so much that they named the lake and river after her!!! Her name was actually Fanny Hooe!!! The lake and creek are some of the few that have retained their original names from the 1800s!!! Here are some photos of the lake and creek ---

Then I explored the fort. Here are some photos of the buildings ---

They even rebuilt the outhouses and civilian houses that were adjacent to the fort!!! I found a model that was constructed of old photos and the reconstruction looks very much like the model!!! ---

Here are a few shots of the inside of the buildings showing how they would have looked in the 1800s. Most rooms were walled off with glass, so some reflections occurred ---

It was starting to get late, so I walked back to my trailer and got ready for bed. I had a big day planned for tomorrow – I was going to a copper mine!!!

Well, that was my day!!! Very busy, mostly driving, but some interesting and fun site seeing!! I even learned a few things!!!

So, with that, I will go for now, but I will see you all again tomorrow.

Again, to quote that great comedian, Red Skelton, "Good Night and May God Bless!"

Happy Trails ---- Jon
