Museum Day

Hello Fellow Wayward Travelers!!!

Today I had it planned to go through my first opened museum. It was the Museum of Oregon Territories in Oregon City, Oregon. It was a nice museum with a great staff, but I was hoping for more items on and about the Oregon Trail. It had a little, but most of the information and exhibits were about the settlement of Oregon City and the surrounding areas. Was I disappointed --- No!! It's a museum, how could I be disappointed!!!

Anyway, as I told you, the pioneers came to Oregon because the government was giving them land - lots of land. I said 650 Acres, but it was 640 Acres. Here's a picture of the legal document that the pioneers were travelling for:

This also give the wives part of the property - which was unusual in those days.

Most of the museum was made up of items from Oregon City and it's past. Such as the modern conveniences that the modern woman would have in her home -

A Cream Separator (used more in the dairy that the home):

The Washing Machine (can you figure out how to use it?):

and, of course, the peddle operated sewing machine (my Mom had one when I was little):

Once electricity came to town, then the appliances got modern - like this kitchen stove - which looked like the wood burning stove, just white with electric burners!

Now with all these modern appliances, you had to be a well dressed woman, so this is what you would wear -

I could actually see my wife, Lynn, in this dress - and looking GOOD!!!

Now there is also school for the kids - and I sat in one of these for my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades - what about you???

Now, if you were a doctor, you would have the most modern vehicle -

and you would get your supplies from the best stores (yes, those are all the known drugs of the day on those shelves) -

with your pills made in the most moder ways (by hand) -

This museum showed life in a small pioneer town as it started to grow. I thought the exhibit was fascinating and informative. To me it is amazing how we humans can make things to meet our needs. I think that is why I like museums so much, they show us how we think and how we become inventive!! Okay, that was the Engineer in me talking!! But, it is still interesting!!!

Well, I need to get organized for tomorrow. We will be driving the South Route to The Dalles, Oregon. So, I will go for now, but I will see you all again tomorrow. Again, to quote that great comedian, Red Skelton, "Good Night and May God Bless!"

Happy Trails ---- Jon
