Having WiFi Problems - Posted 05/24/2013 on 05/26-2013

Post from 05/24/2013 ---

Well, I haven't been able to work on my BLOG the last few days because of WiFi Problems. The new RV Park I am in has WiFi, but it won't stream, so my pictures won't load. I was told that most RV Parks have that type of WiFi. (The last one I was in had Comcast WiFi just like at home, so there were no problems). Anyway, I should have been able to use my Cell Phone as a WiFi Hot Spot, but it wasn't working either. So after going to the nearest Verizon Wireless store (and not getting it fixed), I called the help desk and the young lady there got me all fixed. Now my cell phone again works as a WiFi Hot Spot so I can do my BLOG. But, I just got the Cell Phone fixed and it is now 11:00 PM and I need to go to bed. So, there will be no BLOG tonight, but I will double and triple up for tomorrow.

Thank you for your patience and understanding of this techno-dinosaur!!!

Hello Fellow Wayward Travellers ---

I bet you're not as WAYWARD as I am!!!???

Well, today (05/24/2013) I drove from Pendleton, Oregon to The Dalles, Oregon to see what I missed by driving almost straight through to Pendleton.

First, I visited the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center. This is a Museum that covers all the activities of the area from the Ice Age through today.

Staring with the Ice Age, there were Mammoths in this area with all the other animals. And they weren't just any old Mammoth -- they were the biggest!!! They stood 13 feet at the top of the head with tusks that could be 13 feet long!!! They were almost three to six feet taller than the woolly mammoth!! Here's a picture of their display ---

Since I am driving the Oregon Trail, I needed to see the display about that trek. The display depicts a pioneer family with their wagon loaded onto a raft floating down the Columbia River. There was a recorded monologue at this exhibit talking about the hazards of floating the Columbia vs the Barlow Pass overland route --- neither way sounded very fun!!! Here's a picture of that exhibit ---

There were other Great Exhibits if the growth of The Dalles, but I was more interested in the Oregon Trail. There was a portion on Lewis and Clark, riverboats on the Columbia, the fruit and fish canneries, and the native peoples and their lives.

From here I went to another Museum that was part of the earlier settlers and a military fort called Fort Dalles. This all happened after the area started being settled, but it was interesting. The first building you tour is the fort's medical building or doctor's house. It was the actual house only refurbished. Here is a photo of it ---

From here we took a tour of a house built and owned by one of the original families of The Dalles, The Anderson Family. Here is a photo of their home (it was moved from it original place to the fort museum, but it is the original house) ---

And some photos of the inside of the house ---

And some photos of their barn ---

And, of course, the vehicles of the days/years ---

 A Covered Wagon ---

A Mail Stage Coach ---

A Hotel Coach ---

Now, The Dalles claims that it is "The End of The Oregon Trail" as does Oregon City!!?? And, they both have signs and monuments like this one in The Dalles ---

So who gets the honor of being the End of the Oregon Trail --- I will let you decide!!!

Well, that is your historical, and, I hope, hysterical, lesson for today!!?? I am going to go for now, but I will see you all again tomorrow. Again, to quote that great comedian, Red Skelton, "Good Night and May God Bless!"

Happy Trails ---- Jon
